DISTANT LAND MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007
Marlborough experienced a cool period around flowering
which naturally reduces yield per vine. This allows the vine
to ripen grapes earlier and with more concentration of
flavour and aroma. Marlborough then enjoyed a relatively
warm, dry summer and a classic autumn, with warm days
and cool nights helping preserve the aromas and flavour
Parcels of ripe fruit were selected from two different
vineyards in the Rapaura and Renwick regions. Both
feature river-bed stony soils, accentuating the free-draining
of water and reflection of sun onto the berries. Our
Rapaura vineyard was harvested on the 12th and 13th of
April and the Renwick on the 14th of April. The grapes were
harvested in the early morning to keep the fruit cool,
minimising oxidation of aromatics and flavours.
The juice was fermented using a number of selected yeast
strains and at a range of temperatures, to enable us to
capture a spectrum of flavour and aroma profiles. We then
matured this Sauvignon on its yeast lees before selecting
the best tanks to blend together to achieve a wine of
balanced palette weight, character and interest.
The nose features sweet passionfruit, guava, gooseberries
and fig, mingling with herbaceous tomato stalk. The palate
is rich and smooth, bursting of sweet, luscious, whitefleshed
fruits and finishing with a lingering crisp acidity.
Serve chilled, great with a wide variety of seafood dishes.
